Tesla and SpaceX to Invest $16.8 Billion in New AI Chip Plant in Texas

**Texas:** Tesla and SpaceX are moving ahead with plans for a major semiconductor project in Texas as the two companies look to secure the computing power needed for their growing artificial intelligence operations.

The companies said they initially will invest some **$16.8 billion** in a new facility in Grimes County, Texas, called **Terafab**, Reuters reported.

The project is designed to manufacture advanced chips for applications ranging from Tesla’s humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles to SpaceX’s plans for space-based data centers.

## Terafab could be one of the world’s largest chip factories When complete, the planned Terafab facility will be about **100 million square feet**.

Unlike a traditional chip plant focused on one part of the manufacturing process, the facility is planned to bring several stages of production together, including chip manufacturing, packaging and testing.

The companies believe they will need a huge amount of computing capacity as their AI-related projects expand. Reuters reported that the combined demand from Tesla and SpaceX could exceed **1 terawatt of computing power** in the coming years.

## Cybercab and Optimus Chips One of the main drivers for the project for Tesla is the increased focus on AI and robotics for the company.

Terafab’s chips are expected to be used in projects including Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, and its autonomous vehicle program, Cybercab.

Tesla is increasingly positioning itself as an AI and robotics company rather than an electric vehicle company. More control over its chip production could give the company more flexibility as the demand for computing power increases.

## SpaceX Has Its Own Plans for the ChipsSpaceX is also expected to use the facility’s chips.

The company is aiming to create a vast computing infrastructure in space, which may demand a large quantity of sophisticated processors.

The Terafab project is thus part of a broader drive by Elon Musk’s companies to secure hardware they expect to require for future AI projects.

## Investment May Grow Exponentially Up front is $16.8 billion.

Reuters reported that the project could eventually reach around **$119 billion** if all planned phases are developed. The facility is also expected to create at least **3,000 high-paying jobs** in Texas.

Tesla has already started foundation work connected to the project near its Giga Texas operations, according to the report.

## Intel Joins the Project

The Terafab plan also involves **Intel**, which is expected to support the companies with semiconductor manufacturing technology.

Tesla has previously indicated that it plans to use Intel’s next-generation **14A process** for chips connected to the Terafab project.

The involvement of an established semiconductor manufacturer could be important as Tesla and SpaceX attempt to build a large-scale chip manufacturing operation of their own.

### Big Play on AI Hardware “Building a semiconductor facility of this scale will require significant investment, technical know-how and time.

For Tesla and SpaceX, however, the project reflects a growing belief that access to advanced computing hardware will be critical to their future plans.

If the project reaches its planned scale, Terafab could become an important part of Musk’s broader technology ecosystem and one of the more ambitious semiconductor projects in the United States.
